Exponential technologies have the potential to revolutionize nearly every aspect of our daily lives, but we need to move into that future mindfully. In Deep Medicine: How Artificial Intelligence Can Make Healthcare Human Again, Dr. Eric Topol highlights the urgency of deciding how we want AI to impact medicine—from birth to burial.

Topol advocates a three-pronged approach to returning humans (both healthcare providers and patients) to the center of medicine:

💡 With deep phenotyping, we harness wearables, sensors, machines, and biotech to gather unprecedented amounts of individualized data.

💡 With deep learning, we make sense of those data, personalizing health and wellness and turbocharging biomedical discovery.

💡 With deep empathy, healthcare workers are empowered to observe, listen, and touch patients as they experience vulnerability and suffering—to lay hands on people rather than on keyboards.

Deep Medicine guides the reader through these approaches, with copious examples from the biomedical literature and from companies on the cutting edge of innovation. If you know a little bit about AI, and/or a little bit about medicine and biotech, then this book is perfect for you. I particularly appreciated the extensive references for further exploration.

Perhaps most importantly, Topol shares stories about his own experiences with the medical system, as a healthcare provider and also as a patient.

💡 In that sense, this book “about algorithms” comes across as intensely human.

This intense humanity and humaneness is the core of his vision for the future of medicine. This is an exciting moment to move us toward such a future, and Topol helps us see how we could achieve it.
